If water damage is left untreated it will lead to the reproduction of mould and bacteria spores, creating another aspect of work to remove mould on top of the original water damage. The longer water is left the more extensive the damage can become. Removing the water is the priority, then we will work quickly to dry out water. After which we then work to remove bacteria, mould, and water stains.

Water damage can involve 3 different types of water. It’s useful to be able to identify and understand these categories as it will help both you and us know what precautions to take on-site. You should also be aware that without being treated, water will over time become more contaminated, changing category as it slowly turns into what’s classed as ‘black water’

    CLEAN WATER

In simple terms clean water is that which is used for drinking, washing, toilet flushing, cooking, and farm irrigation – in other words it’s come from a potable supply line. If the water has come into contact or passed through other areas it may have mixed with soils or contaminants from floor coverings, sub-flooring, walls, decking, and other building materials, making it non potable. ‘Clean water’ when left alone will over time become contaminated with bacteria and turn into ‘grey’ or ‘black’ water. Sources of clean water include (but not limited) the overflow of running taps, a bath, or a sink.

    GREY WATER

Grey water is that which is polluted and contains contaminants which make it unsafe for consumption. It contains harmful micro-organisms and nutrients which cause grey water to quickly turn black if it’s not attended to. This category of water is dangerous and is best left to a professional to clean up. Examples of grey water include (but not limited to): Overflow from a toilet containing some urine but no faeces. Water from household appliances such as a dishwasher or washing machine. A punctured waterbed or broken aquarium which contains chemically treated water. Water that is flowing from a hole in the roof and which has passed through ceiling insulation.

    BLACK WATER

This type of water is harmful to living things and could cause serious illness or death if consumed. Despite its name, the water doesn’t have to look black – it can be clear and may or may not smell. Substances the water may contain include pesticides, faeces, urine, pathogenic waste, bacteria, land other dangerous chemicals or micro-organisms. You should always call in a professional to deal with this type of water damage. Sources of black water include (but not limited to): Sewer water or back-up from a sewer. Rising water from streams, dams or rivers. Toilet water back- flow from beyond the toilet trap. Ground or surface water, sea water.

    • Home Friendly will be there for you regardless of the hour, day or night 24/7

    • Our technicians can assist with emergency water extraction clean-ups, specialising in water extraction on carpets, upholstery and mattresses.

    • We take pride in working with families in conjunction with insurance companies to act quickly against water damage to carpets, in most cases we are able to restore carpets back to their original functionality pre-disaster.

No matter how big your problem here are some water damage tips that you can implement immediately:

    • Do not utilize any plugged-in electrical devices

    • Locate the source of the water and try to stop it if you can do so safely.

    • Clean any visible standing water and wipe down any affected areas

    • Open doors to expedite drying of affected materials

    • Remove all loose items from the affected areas to open the workspace

  • COCKROACHES

Cockroaches are not only unsightly, but they can wreak havoc on your property if left unattended. Aside from making you jump, cockroaches can pose a serious health risk as they are potential carriers of gastro-enteritis, dysentery and have also been linked to asthma.

They like to hide near food preparation areas, in kitchen cupboards, under sinks, behind the fridge and anywhere that is dark and damp, such as drains and with easy access to food. No matter how clean your house, cockroaches will invade! Cockroaches on the Sunshine Coast can become a real infestation problem and if you see a cockroach or two, there is a good chance that there are many more about. Usually not seen during the day.

There are three main types of cockroaches that you will encounter on the Sunshine Coast, these are American, Australian and German Cockroaches.

    • The American and Australian cockroaches have wings and can fly into your homes at any time though an unguarded window or door. They like to breed in bark, leaf mulch and palm trees.

    • German Cockroaches are much smaller than the two species, however, they are fast breeders. They are attracted to food scraps, dirty dishes, and poor hygiene; however, they can have entered your home via a storage container or the likes of. These are commonly found in cafes, restaurants, and bars.

    PREVENTATIVE SUGGESTIONS FOR COCKROACHES

    • Keep bins clean and sealed

    • Keep areas liquid and crumb free.

    • Keep all food in air tight container

    • Do not leave dirty dishes in the sink over night

    • Cockroaches love warm places so keep areas like underneath fridges and around electrical items like televisions clean and free from dust.

    • Food and dust often collect in and around sofas, be sure to vacuum these areas regularly.

    • Seal gaps around doors and windows.

    • Fix all water leaks in and around your home.

    ANTS

Ants are a common problem in properties right across Australia, so you aren’t alone when it comes to wanting them gone.

Ant control can be quite difficult because our buildings provide the ideal shelter, food, warmth, and water that they require. You may see them in roof voids and subfloors, in your kitchen, along the edge of your building or in and around pet bowls.

Aside from being unsightly, ants love to feast in unsanitary areas and are known to spread germs back into your home.

Treating ants involves identifying the ant specie and what has caused them to enter your living space. After identifying the source of the ant problem, one of our friendly technicians will treat your home and advise of anything you may need to seal.

    PREVENTATIVE SUGGESTIONS FOR ANTS

    • Keep cupboards and countertops free of crumbs and food

    • Keep opened food in sealed containers

    • Place open foods in the fridge

    • Place rubbish in bins with sealing lids

    • As soon as your pet has finished eating store away pet food.

    SPIDERS

Home Friendly can help you get rid of spiders. We have an excellent knowledge of the different species of spiders on the Sunshine Coast.

We understand the behaviours associated with each spider and after a thorough inspection of your property, will treat accordingly.

    SILVERFISH

Silverfish can survive in most climates, but they do love dark, damp places like basements, kitchens, bathrooms garages and sheds. Paper and damp clothing are silverfish’s favourite and you can almost always find them setting up home in any boxes you have stored in your shed or garage.

White to brown grey or silver in colour and up to 12-19mm in length silverfish are nocturnal, fast moving pests. They may have infested your wardrobes and begun the process of destroying clothes long before you even realise that you have an infestation. These pests reproduce very quickly.

Silverfish feed on carbohydrates such as sugars, starches, glue in books, linen, and paper. Whilst they are harmless to people, they certainly are very unpleasant house guests. As our weather here on the Sunshine Coast can become quite humid our homes can provide a perfect breeding ground for these pests.

    BED BUGS

Our Bed Bugs treatment varies depending on the strain of bed bugs in your home. Our expert technicians will come to your home and identify the type of bed bugs, treat your home, and step you through the process of how to eliminate any residual bed bugs from your linen and clothing.

Bedbugs are one of those things in life that we simply do not wish to talk about or admit to having infestations in our home. Bed bugs over the centuries has become a stigma due to myths associated with the bug, such as: only dirty, cluttered homes get bedbugs. Another misconception is that if you find you have a bedbug infestation you must destroy all infested clothing and furniture. Totally untrue.

Bedbugs are small, oval shaped insects that live on the blood of humans or animals. An adult can grow to the size of an apple seed. They do not fly but they can move over floors, walls, and ceilings quickly. They are a nuisance and do not restrict their breeding activities or infestations to beds alone.

There is a process in eliminating bed bugs, talk to our friendly staff to work out the best treatment for you.

  • Treating a home for fleas requires a separate treatment to the general home pest control as the biology of fleas is vastly different to general pests. To effectively treat fleas, it is important to hatch all the flea eggs lying dormant around your home. Once hatched, our 100% safe and effective treatment will eliminate the fleas from your home.

On the Sunshine Coast, we have several species of fleas, with the most common being the cat flea which generally invade our pets and sometimes our own bodies, if the flea colony becomes out of control. It is the distress and discomfort of a flea bite that generally makes you aware of a possible infestation.

Fleas are wingless insects, 1.5 – 3.3mm long, with mouth parts adapted for piercing skin and sucking blood. Fleas feed off the blood of humans and animals, such as dogs and cats. Most flea bites on humans are on the lower legs and can become very itchy. Some people are more sensitive that others to flea bites and may suffer an allergic reaction.

If you have moved into an unoccupied house and find you have fleas it can be because fleas and their lava are often buried in carpets. They can lay dormant for long periods of time and only require slight vibrations from you or your pet to wake them and have them attach and start to feed.

If you think you have fleas mow your lawn, vacuum your carpets, and dispose of the vacuum bag. Treat your pets and call Home Friendly who will conduct a thorough treatment of the entire property to rid you of the flea infestation.

All rental properties that have pets are required by their real estate agent to have an end of lease flea spray when vacating.

  • Our technicians come to your home and install rodent baiting systems. The rodents are attracted to the bait, which they digest and tell their pack about it, then scurry away. Within 3-6 days your rodent problem is no more.

A significant force worldwide, rodents are arguably the most significant global pest for mankind. The two most common pests are:

    • The Black Rat

    • The House Mouse

They are present on every continent, causing problems that range from damage and loss in food production to structural damage and disease transmission. Rats are known vectors of many human diseases such as leptospirosis, typhoid and even salmonellosis. Rodent’s harbour serious livestock diseases including several bacteria and viruses.

Thoroughly inspect the area to determine the extent of infestation and the type of rodent. Rodent management starts with good sanitation. Eliminate access to food and remove rubbish or clutter which rodents use as breeding or hiding places. Rodent-proof premises by sealing up areas where they can enter the building. Traps can also be used for smaller populations but are less effective for large populations.

Rodenticide baits placed strategically where rats/mice roam and seek food offer efficient control. Today’s rodenticides are anti-coagulants, causing death by inhibiting blood coagulation. This process takes several days. Anti-coagulants treatments fall into two categories, Single dose or multi-dose.

  • Home Friendly will conduct Regular and Pre-Purchase Pest across the Sunshine Coast and surrounding areas. When buying an investment, you need to have complete peace of mind that the building is Termite free. We understand the need to be 100% accurate when looking at our client’s investment and also report back on ways to help prevent the risk of a future termite attack.

    QBCC Number: 15055378

The purpose of a pre-purchase timber pest report on a property is to assess the following:

    • Evidence of Timber pests

    • Severity of damage caused by timber pests

    • Susceptibility of building to infestation by timber pests

    • Remedial and protective measures required

    • Educates you about termites and the risks

    • Prevention advice

Termites are one of the most destructive pests in Australia. Current building regulation is on managing termites through barrier systems and ongoing inspections as opposed to more harmful methods of controlling termites. Regular termite inspections by an experienced timber pest inspector are strongly recommended. An inspection of the property should be carried out every 6-12 months to increase the chance of early detection before major damage. All termite inspections come with a comprehensive report including information related to areas conducive to termite attack and how best to correct the problems as well as details about all timber damage found. We offer a fully detailed visual termite Inspection that goes above Australian standards.

    Termite Treatment Options

There are now more choices than ever for termite control. The right treatment option for your infestation will depend on the level of infestation, housing construction type and budget available. Termites are a silent home destroyer, and to our knowledge no home insurance policies cover termite damage. Evidence of termites rarely becomes visible to the homeowner until significant and costly damage has already occurred. Our experienced technicians are expertly trained at inspecting your property for signs of termites. We use thermal cameras, borescopes, and moisture detectors, along with other advanced techniques to search for termites.

Home Friendly have completed an in-depth training program and have been accredited as Authorised Preferred Operators to supply and install the EXTERRA Termite Baiting System.

    Top reasons to use Exterra:

    • Exterra is a non-toxic bating system.

    • Unique Termite Interception Zone protects your home.

    • Focus Termite Attractant draws termites into the Exterra Station.

    • Larger Station intercepts termites better.

    • Preferred eucalypt timbers ensure termites enter Stations.

    • Quality Controlled System.

    • Safe for you, your pets and the environment.

    • Eliminates the Termite Colony.

    • Can be installed in any soil type.

    • Does not discriminate 100% of homes can use the system

A few tips on Termite Prevention and what you can do to help reduce your risk of Termite Infestation:

    • Termites will require a ready water supply so find and repair any water leaks you may have inside or outside of your home, such as leaking hoses, drains and pipes. Direct run off away from the house.

    • Make sure the sub-floor area of your house has good cross-floor ventilation, drainage, and access for a Termite Inspection

    • Keep your home well ventilated, including the attic and underneath the house if you live on stumps. This can help to prevent moisture.

    • Do not use untreated timbers for garden beds or retaining walls as they may attract termites.

    • Store firewood or any building materials a good distance from your house. Clear any dead trees or old wood stumps from your yard as any wood that touches the ground is highly likely to be discovered by termites.

    • Wood mulch, damp garden beds and ponds are all attractive to termites – if you live in a high-risk area consider termites when planning landscaping.

    • Ensure that food sources such as branches, wooden ladders and so on, aren’t left leaning against your house.

    • Check your foundations for cracks and other termite entry points and patch where necessary.

    • Do not allow garden beds or paving to cover over weep holes or the external edge of your concrete slab and always allow at least a 50mm inspection zone from the top of the slab.

    • Ensure that any fences, verandas, ferneries, etc that join onto your home are designed to prevent termite entry and do not provide a bridge for the termites to by-pass any termite barrier you have in place

    • Have your house regularly inspected for termites and check yourself for any flooring that feels ‘soft’ or solid woodwork that sounds hollow when tapped. The earlier termites are detected, the better.

  • Home Friendly offers a concise Base Composite Meth Screening service to ascertain if Meth is present in a property. This test determines if the level exceeds the national acceptable standard of a maximum of 0.5μg/100cm². In the event the result indicates higher than acceptable levels, in depth room sampling is required. Home Friendly will notify you if this is the case.

Home Friendly’s services are designed to ensure that you don’t purchase a property or have an existing property that is contaminated with methamphetamine residue or other contaminates associated with the manufacture or consumption of methamphetamine. Our technicians are trained to the highest possible level of competency with results available within minutes of samples being taken.

Methamphetamine or Meth (ice, chalk, glass, P etc), is a highly addictive chemical-based stimulant that affects the central nervous system. In non-prescribed doses, Meth causes a very high stimulant level to the brain with adverse effects on the body, including appetite suppression, increased physical activity and talkativeness and a strong sense of euphoria. Meth is a poison that acts firstly as a stimulant then systematically starts to destroy the body.

HOW DOES METH CONTAMINATE A SURFACE?

The larger concern relates to the manufacture of the drug in dwellings. The process of manufacturing methamphetamine can include heavy metals, carcinogenic hydrocarbons, and other toxic chemicals. Some of these will ‘air out’ eventually, but many will persist in the air, on surfaces and inside porous materials. Solid forms of methamphetamine can be spilled and worked into carpets, and furniture.

SYMPTOMS & EFFECTS OF METH EXPOSURE

    • Headaches

    • Watery or burning eyes

    • Nausea

    • Burning skin

    • Coughing or choking

    • Pain in diaphragm

    • Feeling of coldness or weakness

    • Shortness of breath/dizziness

    • Decrease in cognitive function, vertigo and convulsions

    • Cardiovascular problems, including rapid heart rate, irregular heartbeat, and increased blood pressure

    • Hyperthermia (elevated body temperature) and convulsions may occur with methamphetamine overdose, and if not treated immediately, can result in death

    • Grooming (Pile Setting)

    • Methamphetamine Psychosis: heavy and frequent use can lead to “methamphetamine psychosis” for some people. This condition is characterised by paranoid delusions, hallucinations and bizarre, aggressive, or violent behaviour

    • Young children are particularly susceptible to the health effects of meth residue exposure.

RESPIRATORY PROBLEMS AMONG CHILDREN & ASTHMATICS

    • Disrupted sleep patterns amongst children

    • Changed behavioural patterns in children

    • General higher susceptibility to illness

    • Irritation to skin and eyes

YOUR FAMILY’S HEALTH & SAFETY IS PARAMOUNT

You need to know what you are exposing your family to. Exposure to P/meth/ice residues can create significant short and long-term health risks. Meth’s toxic vapours permeate the property surfaces and those exposed to these surfaces can ingest the contaminants. Babies and small children exposed to the toxic by-products tend to suffer a higher degree of health issues.

  • Traditional cleaning has always been based on seeing a visibly clean environment. Infection Control cleaning is a new method to remove, kill and prevent the things we can’t see. Millions of bacteria and viruses live among us in our day to day lives. They go unseen and unnoticed until they enter our bodies and make us unwell. By this stage, it is too late. Other infections such as Norovirus affect thousands of people each year, closing restaurants, businesses, schools, and hotels.

Using Home Friendly’s fogging system, causes minimum downtime and disruption. It can be used to treat small, large, and hard to reach areas in a short period of time. We use fogging through the application of Biomist to kill up to 99.999% of harmful pathogens such as Norovirus, Swine Flu, E. coli, Salmonella, Legionella and many more. This provides all our clients with the peace of mind they deserve.

    How it Works

After a thorough clean, our fogging operatives fill each room with a fine mist of 10-micron particles. As the particles settle onto all the surfaces, our powerful sterilizing agent kicks into action killing Bacteria, Spores and Viruses fast. Our fogging machines generate extremely small droplets of specialist disinfectant which settle underneath, on top of and on the sides of objects, soft furnishings, furniture, and hard to reach areas. This efficient process significantly reduces pathogens when compared to manual surface cleaning resulting in a cleaner and safer environment.

    Home Friendly Service:

    • Significantly reduces the number of pathogens when compared to manual surface cleaning alone.

    • Complete disinfection of your home in a short space of time with minimal disruption.

    • Foggers generate extremely small droplets so that they settle underneath, on top of and on the side of many objects and inaccessible areas.

    • Uses our special disinfectant fog which kills pathogens, destroys malodours.
